Jekyll Island Club Drive & Dine - 3-21-2010
It was an incredible day, despite the dreary weather! Because it was raining when we arrived at the Jekyll Island Club Hotel, our private Porsche Parade of 17 cars and 1 Suburban delivered the ladies to a covered portico before parking beyond the croquet field. (Chivalry isn't dead, after all!) We were joined by Bruce and Ann Toothaker, who were visiting from the PCA Champlain Region in NY after having worked as volunteers at the Amelia Concours last weekend. After a leisurely feast of breakfast, lunch, and desserts-to-die-for, we were surprised by club member, Tim Murphy, who announced that he had arranged a special opportunity to tour a "cottage" on St. Simons Island which is owned by a fellow Porsche enthusiast, Dell Masters. What a wonderful surprise! Dell lives and works in CA, but built his beautiful "green" vacation/resort home (14,000+ sq. ft.) in the area a few years ago. He graciously welcomed all 35+ visitors with a smile and gave us a guided tour of the estate property. The home sits on a 3+ acre hammock on Little Hawkins Island, and it took several years to obtain the necessary permits to build the home and bridge to get there. After the tour we all adjourned to the on-site "Club" where we consumed a few of our favorite adult beverages before beginning our return journey to Jacksonville. Not a bad day, and the sun even came out as we came down I-95. BTW, someone, who shall remain nameless, was lucky to receive a nice gift from GA's finest for exceeding the posted you know what down I-95.........
